Pre-Requisite Requirements

Upper Division Baccalaureate Program

This program is designed for students with at least 60 credit hours of prior post-secondary education. This curriculum provides an accelerated pathway for entry level positions in the nursing profession as a Registered Nurse (RN).  RNs work to promote health, prevent disease, and help patients cope with illness.  They provide direct patient care, observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress in patients.  RNs may assist physicians during surgery and treatment of patients. Specific rules regarding the "scope of practice" for RNs are established by State Boards of Nursing.  RNs may work full time or part time in physician’s offices, clinics, community health, surgery centers, or in hospitals, nursing care facilities, or in patient's homes.  Nurses may also work in schools, community health centers, or industrial sites for private or government agencies.

The Upper Division Baccalaureate Program is a 101 quarter credit educational program offered over seven  (eleven-week) academic quarters.  Graduates of this program will be eligible to take the NCLEX-RN® examination.

Associate Degree in Nursing Program

This program is designed for individuals who seek a program to meet the requirements needed to take the NCLEX-RN® examination, and to seek entry level jobs as a registered nurse.  Registered nurses work to promote health, prevent disease, and help patients cope with illness. They provide direct patient care, observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress in patients. RNs may assist physicians during surgery and treatment of patients.  Specific rules regarding the “scope of practice” for RNs are established by the Colorado State Board of Nursing. RNs may work full time or part time in physician’s offices, clinics, surgery centers, or in hospitals, nursing care facilities, or in patient’s homes.

The two year Associate Degree in Nursing Program is an 82 quarter credit hour educational program offered over six (eleven-week) academic quarters.

This program also allows for an exit out option at the end of the third quarter for those students who wish to become Licensed Practical Nurses.  The Practical Nurse Program is a 53 quarter credit hour educational program offered over four (eleven-week) academic quarters.  Students wishing to take this program may opt out of the regular Associate Degree in Nursing Program at the end of the third quarter (at the completion of NRS 136) to take an alternate fourth quarter of classes in preparation for the NCLEX-PN® examination.  The alternate fourth quarter is listed below.  This program is not currently being offered.

(+1) Year Two Associate Degree Program

This program is designed for licensed practical nurses who wish to advance with one year’s further education to meet the requirements needed to take the NCLEX-RN® examination, and to seek entry level jobs as a registered nurse.  Consistent with the Colorado Nursing Articulation model, PNs may receive credit for LPN coursework, without further testing, completed within three years prior to enrollment. Additional prior coursework is also required for entry into this program as described in this catalog. Registered nurses work to promote health, prevent disease, and help patients cope with illness. They provide direct patient care, observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress in patients. RNs may assist physicians during surgery and treatment of patients. Some experienced RNs may manage other nursing staff including PNs and nurses aids. Specific rules regarding the “scope of practice” for RNs are established by State Boards of Nursing. RNs may work full time or part time in physician’s offices, clinics, surgery centers, or in hospitals, nursing care facilities, or in patient’s homes.  Nurses may also work in schools, community centers, or industrial sites for private or government agencies.

The (+1) Year Two Associate Degree Program is a 39 quarter credit hour educational program offered over four (eleven-week) academic quarters.  Consistent with the Colorado Nursing Articulation Model, students are awarded transfer credit for prior LPN education. *Along with credit for other prior nursing courses, students will receive one credit of transfer credit for clinical courses from prior LPN education. Graduates of this program will be eligible to take the NCLEX-RN® examination.
